GASA’s The State of Scams in Sweden 2025 report, co-sponsored by BioCatch, highlights the latest fraud trends in the country as reported by Swedish consumers.
In this report, you’ll discover:
- Losses significant and widespread: Scammers stole an estimated 1.4 billion SEK ($136 million) in the past year, averaging 1,545 SEK ($153) per victim. Nearly four in 10 adults reported being targeted by scams, and one in 5 parents said their children were also targeted within the last 12 months.
- Reporting high, reimbursements low: While 68% of victims reported scams to their payment provider, fewer than three in 10 recovered any funds.
- Scams slide into DMs: 86% of scam attempts in the past year happened on platforms with a direct messaging function. Facebook and Gmail are the most common channels where people encounter scams.
- Shopping and money scams dominate: Shopping (45%) and unexpected money scams (44%) were the most common scam types, impacting around two-fifths of victims.
- Considerable mental health impact: More than half of Swedish scam victims reported stress, and 45% said the experience had a significant or moderate effect on their wellbeing.
- Reimbursement expected: Half of Swedes believe banks should always reimburse scam losses. They also strongly support tougher punishments for perpetrators, more so than the European average.
- Responsibility placed on organizations: 35% of adults say commercial organizations should protect people from scams, especially the online platforms where scams occur (13%). However, Swedes generally view these platforms as less effective than other organizations.
