BioCatch report: 2025 Global Scams

Using behavioral and device intelligence to shine a light on social engineering scams

Our Global Scams report examines the rapid global growth of scams around the world, drawing on data from financial institutions serving nearly 350 million customers across five continents.

In this report, you’ll discover:

  • Scams on the rise worldwide: Scam volumes grew across every region, with a 65% increase in the total number of scams reported by BioCatch customers globally between 2024 and 2025. That includes a 63% uptick in romance scams, a 42% increase in investment scams, and a tenfold surge in SMS text-based phishing attacks.
  • Purchase scams remain dominant: BioCatch’s research finds purchase scams remain the most prevalent scam type in the world, with attempts increasing by 14% in the last year.
  • Vishing takes off: Voice phishing (vishing) scams doubled, making vishing the second-most reported scam type globally. The surge reflects criminals’ growing reliance on phone-based social engineering, where urgency and authority cues trick victims into sharing sensitive data or authorizing transfers.
  • Behavioral intelligence offers a solution: A lone positive from the report: BioCatch customers reported a 15% decrease in impersonation scams, partly due to the adoption of behavioral solutions. By analyzing subtle user behaviors — like mouse patterns, typing cadence, device handling, and navigation flow — behavioral systems can distinguish genuine customers from fraudsters who are trying to impersonate them, even when the criminal has stolen credentials or is guiding the victim through a scam.
